Welcome to the 2020-2021 School-Year!

How to begin a new school-year as our country struggles to control an unprecedented pandemic? For the first time ever, we will begin this school year in a Distance Learning format, meaning that teachers and students will be in different locations while learning. I want to reassure you that we are still a school, your school. And that we are determined to create and deliver learning experiences for all our students that will support and expand their knowledge, skills, and high-order thinking. Now more than ever, we need to be connected and in communication with one another.

Our lines of communication are open and varied. Find us at the District website: cvesd.org under the Schools tab. You can always visit this, our School Blog at ValleyVistaVikingNews.org . You can expect weekly messages from me via School Messenger which accesses the phone and email we have on file for you. We also have a school-wide Class Dojo landing site that you can check into once you have signed up to Class Dojo with your child’s homeroom teacher.

You should know, M E T A S represents Valley Vista’s focus on providing a Multicultural Education through Arts and Sciences to every student. In addition, the word METASin Spanish means GOALS in English. We value and practice setting goals with both students and adults as a means to promote a Growth Mindset and build Self Efficacy. We see learning as a journey that takes teamwork, planning, vision, grit, and shared leadership. For this year 2020-21, our District’s theme is GREATNESS and we aim for nothing less at Valley Vista.

en español: ¿Cómo comenzar un nuevo año escolar mientras nuestro país lucha por controlar una pandemia sin precedentes? Por primera vez, comenzaremos este año escolar en un formato de aprendizaje a distancia, lo que significa que los maestros y los estudiantes estarán en diferentes lugares mientras aprenden. Quiero asegurarles que seguimos siendo una escuela, su escuela. Les recuerdo, y a algunos les informo que M E T A S representa el enfoque de Valley Vista en proporcionar una educación multicultural a través de las artes y las ciencias para cada estudiante. Además, la palabra METAS en español significa GOALS en inglés. Valoramos y practicamos el establecimiento de objetivos con estudiantes y adultos como un medio para promover una mentalidad de crecimiento y desarrollar la autoeficacia. Vemos el aprendizaje como un viaje que requiere planificación, visión, determinación y liderazgo compartido. El excito de su(s) hijo(s) requiere que trabajemos en equipo, juntos.

About your Principal

I was born in Tijuana BC, Mexico and grew up essentially on both sides of the border. I identify as Mexican-American and consider myself a San Diego local having attended all my schooling in SD County and having lived in this county for the most part, since I was three years old. My alma maters include UCSD and SDSU. I hold a bachelor’s in communications, and masters and doctorate degrees in Educational Leadership.

I began my career in Education as a Bilingual Teacher in the South Bay Union School District. I taught for ten years in SBUSD in a variety of grades but spent most of my time with 5^th and 6^th graders. I served as a teacher at Emory and Mendoza Elementary schools. I joined the Chula Vista Elementary School District when I was hired to be the first Associate Principal for Salt Creek Elementary School in late 2005.

As the proud principal of Valley Vista Elementary School, it has been my honor to lead this learning community since 2009. We enjoy a nurturing, old-school feel here with a dynamic energy that values and promotes learning, thinking, and everyone’s continual improvement.

I believe that children are our greatest gift and responsibility. I believe that their insight and capacity is boundless. And that, as the leaders of tomorrow, they require an education that unlocks their potential and supports them in figuring out how they work in order to figure out how to make this world a better place.

It is my personal belief and professional endeavor, that our citizens are entitled to an education that grows and develops their brains, hearts, and sense of world-responsibility. I believe that learning in at least two languages, especially from childhood, raises citizens that have a broaden view of their world and builds pathways in them that support taking on the unknown and viewing differences among us as strengths.

Nací en Tijuana BC, México y crecí esencialmente en ambos lados de la frontera. Me identifico como mexicoamericano y me considero nativa de San Diego ya que toda mi educación se realiza en el condado de San Diego y he vivido en este condado la mayor parte de mi vida. Asistí UCSD y SDSU. Tengo una licenciatura en comunicaciones y una maestría y un doctorado en liderazgo educativo.

Comencé mi carrera en Educación como maestra bilingüe en el Distrito Escolar South Bay Union. Como maestra, enseñé durante diez años en SBUSD la mayor parte en quinto y sexto grado. Serví como maestra en las escuelas primarias Emory y Mendoza. Me uní al Distrito Escolar Primario de Chula Vista cuando fui contratada para ser la primera subdirectora de la Escuela Primaria Salt Creek a fines del 2005.

Desde 2009, he tenido el honor de servir como directora de esta escuela primaria, Valley Vista. Disfrutamos aquí de un ambiente acogedor y una energía dinámica que valora y promueve el aprendizaje, el pensamiento y la mejora continua de todos.

Creo que los niños son nuestro mayor regalo y responsabilidad. Creo que ellos tienen una capacidad sin límites. Y ellos, como líderes del mañana, requieren una educación que libere su potencial y los apoye para descubrir cómo hacer de este mundo un lugar mejor.

Creo personalmente y profesionalmente, que estos líderes del mañana tienen el derecho a una educación que crece y desarrolla sus cerebros, sus corazones y un sentido de responsabilidad mundial. Creo que aprender en, al menos en dos idiomas, especialmente desde la infancia, genera ciudadanos que tienen una visión del mundo más amplia, construye caminos en ellos que los apoyan al asumir lo desconocido y, los guía a ver las diferencias entre nosotros como fortalezas.
