1. I still need 2 more parents to serve on our School Site Council (SSC). We only meet once per month and we will support & teach you everything you need to know. Please consider joining the most important teacher & parent committee for the continual improvement of our school. Let me know if we can count on you.
2. We also need a (1) Valley Vista parent representative to attend the District’s Budget Advisory Committee (BAC) meetings. These occur not quite once per month. You will learn all about how our District manages and allocates funds. It is a very interesting committee, especially if you like budgets. The first meeting is scheduled for October 21^st from 6 to 7 PM. Please let me know if you can be our school’s representative.

Lastly, be on the lookout for another Parent Survey from our District. I am part of a team formulating what in-person school may look like when we are ready to make that move. But the most important detail we need for our planning is to know how many of you will send your children back and how many will opt to remain in this Distance Learning format. We need three (3) new parents to join our School Site Council (SSC) for this school year. We have two parents rolling over to their 2^nd year on SSC but every year we need to add first-year parents. The SSC is made up of equal parts teachers and parents and is the main decision-making council for our school. We will support & teach you everything you need to know, and we will meet only once per month and virtually of course. If you are interested, please contact Lety at our front desk early this week.

We will have our first virtual Principal’s Coffee next week on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 5:30 PM. I will talk more about our parent representatives and other committees then. Please mark your calendars, I will follow up next week with the link to join the virtual coffee.

Teachers have begun the beginning of year assessments, but many will continue this week. Hang in there with us, this is taking a bit longer than anticipated but it is moving along.

VAPA classes (Art, Theater, Dance/PE, and Science) will happen this week so be on the lookout for those. Your child should get 2 of those blocks this week.

3^rd Grade will be hosting their Curriculum Night for parents this Thursday, Sept. 17 at 5 PM. You will be able to join on Teams through your child’s account. Expect an invite early in the week.

Happy Labor Day Holiday! A reminder that this holiday is meant to honor and reflect upon workers’ contributions to this country. Classes resume Tuesday 9/8, logging on at 8:15 AM.

While we are in Distance Learning, Valley Vista’s meal distribution will take place as a drive-by, pick-up once a week, every Monday from 12 to 2 PM. Due to today’s holiday, lunches will be distributed on Tuesday this week beginning as noon.

Even though teachers began some individual assessments last week, this week there will be greater emphasis on getting baseline levels for our students in both reading & math. For the most part, this will be done in small groups while other students are working on teacher-assigned tasks. It is vital that we get clear information on what each student really knows. Please provide space and quiet but do not help your child in answering or figuring things out as that will give us false information. 

Also this week, 1^st through 6^th grade classes will be hosting their Curriculum Nights for parents. Please be on the lookout for their invitations as these virtual meetings will give you information on your children’s grade level expectations and the classroom routines and practices so that you are well informed and can better support your child’s academic progress.

We have made it through the first week of school in Distance Learning! We thank you so much for your good humor, kind understanding and your patience. We know this is difficult on parents especially households with several children and work schedules to juggle. We appreciate and thank you on behalf of your children. Together, and taking this step-by-step, we will get through this and be better for it.

1. To get ready for school, I ask that our parents help by establishing a regular school schedule at home. Students need to get to bed early the night before school. Getting up early (with enough time to truly wake up) and having a good breakfast before 8:15 is critical to ensure a good learning experience. Help your children by preparing a “learning/work-space” for them. We learn better when we are dressed and both physically and mentally “ready” for class.
2. This first week will be, as I mentioned in my video, a week of “minimum days”. Your children’s classroom sessions will be ending around 10:30 AM as teachers will go off to participate in more training and planning courses. However, students will be invited to one extra 30 minute session on one day this Tuesday through Friday, either at 10:30 or 11, hosted by one of our VAPA teachers. They will be introducing the program to you and your child. Your home room teacher will share the exact day & time for your session on Monday.
3. A key task for teachers, as we begin the new school year, will be to identify beginning levels for each of our students in order to address their needs and prepare synchronous lessons and asynchronous tasks that are appropriate for your child. During Distance Learning, more than ever, we will need your support to accomplish this task. I am attaching a video that explains the support we will need from parents throughout this process. If you have only returning students from 2^nd to 6^th grade, they already know their username, password and how to log-on to our system. This may not be very important to you.

However, if your child is new to our school, in Kinder or any other grade, or your child has forgotten his or her username & password, this information is very important.  

A robo-call will go out at 2PM today. Please note 3 important items.

1) is your child’s first & last name, and grade, correct? If not, please call us at 619-479-7171

2) You will hear your child’s assigned homeroom teacher’s name. Remember that all DLI students have two classroom teachers, an English one and a Spanish one. However, it is through the homeroom teacher that you will receive your initial information. So, that is what you need to know for now.

3) Please be ready to write down your child’s ID# . Your child’s ID # is your child’s username in our system therefore it is essential for logging-on to Microsoft TEAMs from our District’s website.

In this blog, under the School Messenger page, you will find the exact message sent out. Under this post, you can click on to see several documents. The first one has details on how we configure your child’s password. There you will see how your child’s ID#, initials, and birth date are used to configure their individual passwords.

If you have one of our loaner laptops, please charge it over night and turn it on early in the morning as it it will most likely take a long while to wake-up.

Also, linked below please find 3 flyers sent to you earlier by our District with trainings designed for parents on digital literacy. Some dates have past but there are future dates there that you can take advantage of.

As you know, school will begin this year in a Distance Learning format. This means that learning will happen primarily over the internet and from your home. We have arrived at the week before school starts. You will receive several communications this week as we draw closer to August 31^st, but here are a few things that I hope will set your mind at ease:

1. You can expect step-by-step directions on how to help your child connect with his/her teachers early this week    
2. Our main platform for live lessons will be Microsoft Teams
3. For all students, classes will start at 8:15 AM, Monday through Friday
4. Our end times will vary slightly due to different required minutes for grade-level spans and possible longer breaks in between class blocks. However, you will receive an exact class schedule in order to plan your child’s school days.
5. As for school materials, we invite you to our Drive-by, Pick-up Parades happening as follows: Kindergarten: Friday at 10 AM,                                      1^st-6^th grade on Monday, August 31^st (yes, the first day of school) at staggered times: 6^th at 9 AM, 5^th at 9:30 AM, 4^th at 11 AM, 3^rd at 11:30 AM, 2^nd at 1 PM,and 1^st at 1:30 PM

At those drive-by parades, your child will receive a bag full of all that is needed for school.  We understand that “back-to-school” shopping is, for some a motivating and exciting activity. However, I assure you that your child will receive all that is needed in his/her Pick-up Parade bag. So please be sure to join us in driving through.

Como saben, la escuela comenzará este año en formato de aprendizaje a distancia. Esto significa que el aprendizaje se realizará principalmente a través del internet y desde su hogar. We had an overwhelming response of parents requesting laptops and hotspots. Our intent is to distribute these items to those families on Tuesday, August 25^th.  For pick-up, families will drive through the front parking lot between the hours of 8-10 AM and 2-4 PM. Please note that we will only be providing devices to families that have already indicated a need on the previous inquiry surveys sent out to families last week. Also, be aware that your child’s registration and/or residency verification must be completed before receiving a loaned device from our school. As there will be approximately 200 laptops being distributed, we anticipate a large volume of traffic in our parking lot during the distribution times. It will be extremely helpful if all families who requested a laptop complete the Device Release Form – Phase 3 in advance of visiting the school on Tuesday. We will only distribute devices if this form (link below) has been completed and residency has been verified. Please follow this link to access the Device Release Form – Phase 3:

We will also be handing out wifi hotspots to families who really need them. These are much harder to acquire and therefore we ask that only families with no internet access receive one. I invite you to our New Parent Informational Meeting. This meeting is for any and all new parents to Valley Vista and anyone wanting to know more about Dual Language Immersion. • If joining the meeting from your laptop:

A couple of minutes before the meeting time, click on the link above. If the link is not working for you, copy it and paste it into your browser. You should see the Teams logo: (4 people). Click on “Watch on the web instead”. You will see, “Welcome to the live event” instead of Sign in, click on “Join Anonymously” to join the meeting.

• If joining the meeting on your cell phone:

Click on the link, you will see the Teams logo (4 people). Click “Join meeting”. You may have to type in a random nickname and click “Join meeting” again to get in.

• Details you should know:

The audience will not be able to ask questions live. If you have questions, feel free to type them into the chat box. If I can answer them during the meeting of course, I will.  However, there will be a delay of about 30 seconds in what you are seeing and where I am in the presentation. That may make difficult to address questions on the spot. Questions may have to be answered later. If you are left with questions, please email me and I will respond. This is a new mode of communication for me. Know that I much prefer to see each of you in person, shake your hands, and answer your every query.  

En espanol – Los invito a la junat informativa para padres de familia. Esta reunión es para todos los padres de alumnos nuevos a nuestra escuela y para quien desee saber más sobre nuestro programa de doble inmersión. La reunión se llevará a cabo mañana 20 de agosto, a dos horas diferentes: a las 8:30 AM y de nuevo as las 5 PM. Será el mismo contenido y por lo tanto solo necesitará asistir a una de las juntas. Estas serán presentaciones virtuales, no en persona. Arriba revá los enlaces para las juntas, y aqui hay algunas instrucciones e información clave sobre este tipo de reunión:

Si se une a la reunión desde su computadora portátil:

Un par de minutos antes de la hora de la reunión haga clic en el enlace de la hora que desea. Si el enlace no funciona, cópielo y péguelo en su navegador. Al abrirlo, vera el logotipo de Teams (4 personas). Haga clic en “Ver en la web“. Verá, “Bienvenido al evento en vivo” en lugar de Iniciar la sesión, haga clic en “Unirse de forma anónima” para unirse a la reunión.

 Si se une a la reunión desde su teléfono celular:

Haga clic en el enlace, verá el logotipo de Teams (4 personas). Haga clic en “Unirse a la reunión“. Puede que tenga que escribir un apodo al azar y hacer clic en “Unirse a la reunión” nuevamente para ingresar.

 Detalles sobre este tipo de reunión:

La audiencia no podrá hacer preguntas en vivo. Si tiene preguntas, no dude en escribirlas en el cuadro de chat. Si puedo responderlas durante la reunión, por supuesto, lo haré. Sin embargo, habrá un retraso de unos 30 segundos entre lo que usted ve y en yo estaré en la presentación. Eso puede causar dificultad para responder a las preguntas durante la presentación. Es posible que tendré que responder a las preguntas más tarde. Si tiene preguntas aun después de la presentación, envíeme un correo electrónico y le responderé.
