On Friday, you received a message from our Superintendent explaining our developing plan for reopening in-person school. This will include the CORE FOUR prevention practices, and possibly modified schedules. We will have to be strategic to begin and expand, our phased reopening plan as this school-year unfolds. However, the most important detail we need for our planning is to know how many of you will opt to remain in Distance Learning and how many of you will send your children back to school in-person once we are ready to offer this option.

I am attaching the form necessary for us to gain that vital information from you. I need you to fill this form out for each one of your children.

I thank you for your huge part in our Distance Learning program. It is going well and improving with each week. We appreciate you getting your children ready to learn with breakfast, school materials, internet connection, and a space to learn every school day. Remember that during class times, phone calls and discussions happening at home are broadcast to the entire class and may become a distraction to all. So, thank you again for keeping those class-times a priority in your home during this very unique time in your child’s education.

Our next Principal’s Coffee will be on Tuesday, October 6th at 5:30 PM. I will send a reminder & link as the date draws closer. We especially appreciate our parents who volunteered to serve as parent representatives for our school this school-year.

1. I still need 2 more parents to serve on our School Site Council (SSC). We only meet once per month and we will support & teach you everything you need to know. Please consider joining the most important teacher & parent committee for the continual improvement of our school. Let me know if we can count on you.
2. We also need a (1) Valley Vista parent representative to attend the District’s Budget Advisory Committee (BAC) meetings. These occur not quite once per month. You will learn all about how our District manages and allocates funds. It is a very interesting committee, especially if you like budgets. The first meeting is scheduled for October 21^st from 6 to 7 PM. Please let me know if you can be our school’s representative.

Lastly, be on the lookout for another Parent Survey from our District. I am part of a team formulating what in-person school may look like when we are ready to make that move. But the most important detail we need for our planning is to know how many of you will send your children back and how many will opt to remain in this Distance Learning format. I will alert you to the survey as soon as it is released early this week.

We need three (3) new parents to join our School Site Council (SSC) for this school year. We have two parents rolling over to their 2^nd year on SSC but every year we need to add first-year parents. The SSC is made up of equal parts teachers and parents and is the main decision-making council for our school. We will support & teach you everything you need to know, and we will meet only once per month and virtually of course. If you are interested, please contact Lety at our front desk early this week.

We will have our first virtual Principal’s Coffee next week on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 5:30 PM. I will talk more about our parent representatives and other committees then. Please mark your calendars, I will follow up next week with the link to join the virtual coffee.

Teachers have begun the beginning of year assessments, but many will continue this week. Hang in there with us, this is taking a bit longer than anticipated but it is moving along.

VAPA classes (Art, Theater, Dance/PE, and Science) will happen this week so be on the lookout for those. Your child should get 2 of those blocks this week.

3^rd Grade will be hosting their Curriculum Night for parents this Thursday, Sept. 17 at 5 PM. You will be able to join on Teams through your child’s account. Expect an invite early in the week.

Tenemos dos padres que pasanán a su segundo año en el Consejo, pero todos los años necesitamos agregar padres de primer año a este importante Comité. El SSC está formado del mismo número se maestros y padres de familia unidos para tomar decisiones conmigo, dirigiendo nuestra escuela. Happy Labor Day Holiday! A reminder that this holiday is meant to honor and reflect upon workers’ contributions to this country. Classes resume Tuesday 9/8, logging on at 8:15 AM.

While we are in Distance Learning, Valley Vista’s meal distribution will take place as a drive-by, pick-up once a week, every Monday from 12 to 2 PM. Due to today’s holiday, lunches will be distributed on Tuesday this week beginning as noon.

Even though teachers began some individual assessments last week, this week there will be greater emphasis on getting baseline levels for our students in both reading & math. For the most part, this will be done in small groups while other students are working on teacher-assigned tasks. It is vital that we get clear information on what each student really knows. Please provide space and quiet but do not help your child in answering or figuring things out as that will give us false information. 

Also this week, 1^st through 6^th grade classes will be hosting their Curriculum Nights for parents. Please be on the lookout for their invitations as these virtual meetings will give you information on your children’s grade level expectations and the classroom routines and practices so that you are well informed and can better support your child’s academic progress.

We have made it through the first week of school in Distance Learning! We thank you so much for your good humor, kind understanding and your patience. We know this is difficult on parents especially households with several children and work schedules to juggle. We appreciate and thank you on behalf of your children. Together, and taking this step-by-step, we will get through this and be better for it.
